Just watched an irresistably charming piece – The History Boys. And even though I did not go to an English boys’ grammar school (I’m neither a boy nor English) nor was filled with the desire to be crass or unruly, the bittersweet moments – exam pressures, cross-roads, aspirations, hormonal crushes – totally spoke out to the youth in me.
There were some great dialogue as well (courtesy of Alan Bennett). This being a story about testosterone-raging boys prepping for entrance into Oxbridge, the bit that stood out the most was by Mrs Lintott, the History teacher:
Can you, for a moment, imagine how depressing it is to teach five centuries of masculine ineptitude?
History is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men. What is history? History is women following behind with the bucket.
